Putin arrives in Delhi for Brics Summit, bilateral talks with PM Modi on the cards

Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in New Delhi early Friday to commence his three-day visit to India for the 18th Brics Summit and to hold bilateral meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Russian President was received at the airport in Delhi by Kirti Vardhan Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs. This visit is monumental since it will be Putin's first in-person BRICS Summit outside of Russia since the Ukraine war began in February 2022. The New Delhi Summit comes against a backdrop of mounting pressures on the global economy, including the Russia-Ukraine war, the West Asia crisis, and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.Apart from this, the emerging economies are also dealing with the controversial trade and tariff policies introduced by US President Donald Trump. Putin's visit is also coming amidst escalating conflict with Russia-Ukraine, with both nations targeting critical infrastructure ahead of the challenging winters.Later in the day, the Russian president will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi and will join him for a visit to the Innoprom exhibition, organised by the two countries' ministries of industry and trade. After this, the two leaders will hold wide-ranging bilateral talks, focusing on ways to deepen cooperation in defence, energy, technology, pharmaceuticals and people-to-people ties. The main events of the Summit are scheduled to begin on September 12, with a meeting of BRICS leaders to discuss initiatives put forward by the Indian chairship and prospects for further strengthening the BRICS strategic partnership in politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and humanitarian ties.

Iran's IRGC provided arms & advice to Yemen's Houthi for capturing key Red Sea cityIran-backed Houthis seized control of Yemen's port city of Mocha on Thursday and advanced down the Red Sea coast to other strategic islands, a military source confirmed, reflecting the escalation of the conflict in West Asia. Shortly after the seizure was announced, reports suggested that the Yemeni militant group received direct guidance from Iran's Revolutionary Guards, seeking to open a new front in Iran's war.Yemeni, Iranian and regional sources told Reuters that Houthis conducted the operation in Yemen with Iran's guidance. By seizing the southwestern port ‌city of Mocha, the Houthis have strengthened their chokehold on the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, a key waterway whose disruption further constricts global energy supplies after Iran blockades the Strait of Hormuz. The group is now focusing on consolidating that grip on the strait even as opposing government forces backed by Saudi Arabia focus on an offensive in the north. Last week, Iran told Houthis to escalate their attacks on Saudi Arabia, a close US ally, and promised more funding, weapons and senior officers to help them do so, Reuters reported.
Coforge chairman Om Prakash Bhatt resigns after board audit flags concerns.Coforge shares fell as much as 8.7 per cent to Rs 1,780.70 on the NSE, their biggest intraday decline in more than a year. The stock was among the biggest losers on the Nifty IT index, which was down nearly 3 per cent in morning trade. Bhatt, a former chairman of State Bank of India, had been appointed chairman of Coforge’s board in 2024. His term was due to run until April 2027.Coforge said its internal auditor, as part of its Q2 FY26 audit plan, reviewed the process followed for the board evaluation exercise and the resulting Board Evaluation Report. The review identified concerns over how the evaluation process and report had been handled and presented to the board. It also found that certain material information related to the report, including information concerning the chairman’s performance, had not been fully disclosed to the board when the report was presented.Following the audit findings, the board raised its concerns with Bhatt and sought an explanation. Bhatt provided his response, and the board was still evaluating it when he submitted his resignation on September 8.
IMF welcomes India’s statistical reforms after 7.8% GDP growth beats expectations.India’s real GDP grew 7.8 per cent in the second quarter, exceeding expectations and underscoring the resilience of the world’s fastest-growing major economy, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).Julie Kozack, spokesperson for the IMF, said India’s growth was above the expectations of IMF staff and the consensus among other observers. “India's real GDP in the second quarter grew by 7.8%. That was above our staff's expectations and also the consensus among other observers,” Kozack said. She attributed the upside surprise to stronger-than-expected activity in the services sector and exports.“This upward surprise was driven by stronger-than-expected activity in the services sector and in exports,” she said. The latest figures point to continued momentum in key areas of the Indian economy, with services remaining a major contributor to overall activity. Stronger exports also supported growth, highlighting the role of external demand alongside domestic economic drivers.
Missiles over Saudi, silence in Pakistan. The attacks, launched by Yemen’s Houthi movement, set off fires at key energy facilities, injured dozens of civilians, and briefly disrupted operations linked to Saudi Aramco. As smoke cleared over affected sites in Abha, Jizan, and along the Western maritime corridor, a familiar question echoed across diplomatic channels: Where is Pakistan? Under the landmark Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement (SMDA) — frequently dubbed the "Mecca Defence Pact" after Turkey was added to it — Islamabad and Riyadh pledged that an act of aggression against either nation would be treated as an act of aggression against both. The pact was touted as a historic breakthrough in Arab-South Asian collective security, binding the military power of the world’s only nuclear-armed Muslim state to the financial and strategic heart of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Yet, despite the direct hits on Saudi soil and shipping lanes, Pakistan’s military infrastructure has not mobilised. There are no combat deployments, no retaliatory air sorties from Pakistani squadrons, and no naval Task Force deployments dispatched to the Bab al-Mandeb.The latest round of hostilities erupted after Houthi forces launched a series of long-range loitering munitions and anti-ship ballistic missiles aimed at Saudi industrial and transportation hubs. The strikes specifically targeted. The Houthi military command framed the strikes as a response to ongoing regional maritime blockades and unresolved political disputes.
A guide to building your own bourbon bar at home. If you’ve referred to an American-made whiskey as a Bourbon, you’re not alone. Market share estimates of Bourbon suggest that it outsells all other types of American whiskey by a significant margin. Bourbon whiskey, as we know it, has been a part of America’s popular culture since the 19th Century, and it has seen a huge interest in India, courtesy of the country’s booming cocktail culture. Most mixologists will tell you that Bourbon’s unique mix of versatility and flavour complexity makes it ideal for cocktails. I'll tell you how it can add character to your bar. There are at least two theories about how Bourbon whiskey earned its name. The more widely accepted version is the one that begins with French support for the American colonies that eventually saw a county in Kentucky named Bourbon County (after the French crown). The Corn Patch & Cabin Rights Act of 1776 laid the foundation of the classic Bourbon mashbill. This act offered incentives to any settlers who built cabins and planted corn. Some of that corn began to be distilled as whiskey thanks to European settlers who arrived with rugged stills and knowledge from their respective countries on how to put these stills to good use. The whiskies from Bourbon County had a sweeter flavour compared to the Rye whiskies of the East Coast and eventually came to be known as Bourbon whiskey.
'UAPA probe still on': Govt clarifies NIA chargesheet against Van Dyke, 6 Ukrainians. Responding to the controversy surrounding the dropping of terror charges against Matthew Aaron Van Dyke and six Ukrainian nationals, the government on Wednesday clarified that the terror charges have not been dropped altogether and that the investigation in the case, registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), is continuing. This comes a day after the National Investigation Agency (NIA) filed a chargesheet against the seven individuals under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, but did not invoke provisions of the UAPA. The Opposition criticised the government, alleging that the decision was taken under pressure from the United States. The government, however, has now clarified that the NIA's actions were in accordance with the established legal procedure and were not influenced by any external pressure. In March 2026, the NIA arrested six Ukrainian nationals and Van Dyke from different cities across the country. The agency subsequently claimed that they were connected with Myanmar-based Ethnic Armed Groups (EAGs) and had provided training in drone warfare, drone operations, assembly and jamming technology. The NIA alleged that these EAGs were fighting Myanmar's junta and were also known to provide support to insurgent organisations based in India's Northeast.

Mitchell Santner declines Big Bash opportunity to remain available for India and Australia series.New Zealand white-ball captain Mitchell Santner has turned down a Big Bash League contract to prioritise the Black Caps' Test assignments against India and Australia."When you look ahead to the summer we've got, India here for white ball and Tests and Australia away - there's not many bigger than that - it's quite an exciting time. "I'd like to still be part of that," Santner told the 'New Zealand Herald'. "The offer was good, I'm not going to lie. They knew it would have to be a good offer for me to entertain it with contracting and what would come up. "I did entertain the thought of it, but coming back to what we've got coming up, even if I'm not going to play every game of Test cricket, I still feel like there's a role for me," he added. The Black Caps are scheduled to host India in a full series, including two Tests, from October 22 to December 1 before travelling across the Tasman for a four-Test series against Australia. The 34-year-old also remains keen to continue in the leadership role and believes staying involved with the national team is the better option at this stage of his career.Several New Zealand players have instead taken casual contracts, giving them greater flexibility to participate in overseas franchise leagues while remaining available for international cricket.

Gandhari Movie Review: When Motherhood Turns Into a Fight for Survival. There is something instinctive about a mother’s fear when her child is in danger. It can turn vulnerability into strength and grief into rage. ‘Gandhari’ explores this transformation through Bani, a mother who refuses to accept the disappearance of her daughter and enters a world where the truth is buried beneath layers of crime, deception and betrayal. Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, the film combines a personal emotional journey with a dark crime thriller. Its biggest strength lies in the way the story keeps changing shape through its characters and revelations, while Taapsee Pannu carries the emotional weight of the film almost entirely on her shoulders.‘Gandhari’ works best when it focuses on its characters. At its centre is a mother who has lost almost everything but refuses to lose hope of finding her daughter. Around her is a world filled with people whose motives are not always what they appear to be.
